Ever since the Allies bombed the Axis into submission, Western civilization has had a succession of counter-culture movements that have energetically challenged the status quo. Each successive decade of the post-war era has seen it smash social standards, riot and fight to revolutionize every aspect of music, art, government and civil society.
But after punk was plasticized and hip hop lost its impetus for social change, all of the formerly dominant streams of “counter-culture” have merged together. Now, one mutating, trans-Atlantic melting pot of styles, tastes and behavior has come to define the generally indefinable idea of the “Hipster.”
Any revolution in music, art, government and civil rights has been the effort of individuals growing out of these cliques. You are not doing much when you are simply trying to fit in. You need experience and a stable self-identity to advance a culture, and your message must appeal to the majority of the population to be accepted. Need proof? Answer me this then: what kind of subculture has just elected Obama to office?
The American Apparel V-neck shirt, Pabst Blue Ribbon beer and Parliament cigarettes are symbols and icons of working or revolutionary classes that have been appropriated by hipsterdom and drained of meaning. Ten years ago, a man wearing a plain V-neck tee and drinking a Pabst would never be accused of being a trend-follower. But in 2008, such things have become shameless clichés of a class of individuals that seek to escape their own wealth and privilege by immersing themselves in the aesthetic of the working class.
And what kind of meaning did "icons of working classes" have? Is "I have no money to buy expensive clothes and cigarettes" a better message for the people?
Now, I am not defending Hipsters in particular, I am defending all subcultures. I have never quite fit into one of these groups (oh and how I tried!), but I understand their function. I doubt the power of these groups to bring real change, but I believe that their existence is important for a peaceful secular society.

Trying to fit into a particular subculture is not the right idea. Be yourself and you might be accepted by any subculture. Enjoy them all, take the best of them. That's what I usually do.
Mixing and merging of sub-cultures can only be for the best of all. "If the kids are united, they will never be divided!"
Also, I don't understand what hipsters have to do with counter-culture. Counter-culture is about revolution and reject for the existing society.
See, they don't. That's also what the article said. But my point was that there have been plenty of subcultures which failed to be a "counter-culture" before. I think essentially he's expecting a subculture to be a counter-culture, and that is what disappoints him.
I see. It's true that none of the subcultures where necessary counter-cultures. But there were and are always people who made and make a difference.
Also, other subcultures are not dead. I think, i.e. the punk and hippie cultures are more alive than ever. You just can't sell the Sex Pistols or Jefferson Starship nowadays.
I liked the following sentence in the article: "The dancers are too self-aware to let themselves feel any form of liberation". That's true. But maybe he should just go to some other parties (and socialise with other people).
Sadly, the author is right with his observations. But what's really sad is that his observations whould be fitting for almost all the people in any era.
Well, I ment to say "Jefferson Airplane". Fuck "Jefferson Starship". Rubbish!
It really seems today everyone you meet is part of this hipster culture. The skinny fit jeans and the silly hair. It's like people have no imagination and just eat up what T4 and other such similar programs feed them. But then again you are right It's the individuals that count the most. For instance my best friends are of this "counter culture" and i'm always ripping it out of them for the sillyiness of it. But deep down I know they're good guys just wrapped up into this modern idea. It's a shame it can't be said for the majority of others that I meet as they have the attitude of they only want to know you if your "cool".
One of the things I see about the hipster culture also is that its similar in someways to the ones that have come and gone. For instance your parents laugh at themselves when they see what they were wearing back in their past such as flaired trousers. The same is true of today those people you see walking down the street that think they are so "it" will look back at a picture of themselves in 10 years time and think, "what the hell was I thinking?"
